Meet Lauren, the founder
of The Simplest Self


 

Hi, I’m Lauren Rasmussen (she/her), the founder of The Simplest Self and creator of Bite Sized Healing! 

Through being a survivor of childhood SA, experiencing extreme self hate and shame; and coping with my pain by engaging in addictive patterns to escape, all I wanted to do was run away. 

Despite experiencing so much pain, something in me wanted to survive. Something in me wanted more. I wanted to heal. I wanted to feel calm. I wanted to feel joy. I simply wanted to feel. 

I learned that I disconnected from my body as a way to survive the abuse I was going through as a child. I learned that it then made sense that as I grew up, I continued to do things to keep me out of my body. And that as I learned to reconnect with my body and heal, that would feel unsafe at first. 

It made sense. I made sense. Once I made space for why I did the things that I did to survive, it allowed me to move through the big emotions, regulate my nervous system, and learn to be in relationship to others and trust. 

After going through my own self healing journey, I knew I wanted to hold space for others to do the same. 

I now live a fulfilled life with my husband and 2 cat babies in Canada as I run our online coaching practice, The Simplest Self. Our mission at The Simplest Self is to help you create a life that you feel brave living. Our mission is to help you relearn your relationship to past survival strategies so you can reach your full potential.

Meet your Practitioners, Courtney & Sunny


 

 

Hi! My name is Courtney Shrum (she/her) and I am a trauma-informed practitioner who works from an integrated psychodynamic and trauma informed approach.

First I just want to honor the fact that you made it this far in looking for new ways to take care of yourself. The road of healing isn’t easy so I want to acknowledge that you’ve made it this far - and that in itself takes strength and courage.

My personal experience with trauma has been complicated. I grew up as a product of an accident to very young parents, and I spent a lot of my life feeling like I wasn’t worthwhile and like I constantly had to prove myself worthy. In addition the running tagline in my family was “suck it up” and there wasn’t always space for any emotions that were less than positive. 

I believe that we are all carrying some degree of past trauma or distress that impacts how we function and cope in the present. I want to understand how what happened to you impacts the way you think, feel and process life. I am a calm and compassionate practitioner who creates a safe and non-judgmental environment for you to further explore your truth. 

I also have a background in exercise science with a bachelor's in kinesiology and various certifications surrounding fitness and nutrition (CFL-1, Pn1). With that background, I can help you translate your reactions and emotions as they appear from your body, as well as teach you how to communicate back to create a more harmonious experience internally.

I’m Suneeta Johnson but you can call me Sunny. I use she/her pronouns and I am a heterosexual, cisgendered female, Canadian born to Fijian Indian/Australian settler parents. I acknowledge that I live and work on the unceded and traditional territory of the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), sc̓əwaθenaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsawwassen), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) and S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō) First Nations people. I am a wife and fur momma to two orange tabby cats (Emry and Murphy) and one high energy Golden Retriever (Charlie).

Living through my own childhood trauma I was told by society to just get over it. As a result I struggled with disordered eating, poor self-esteem and bad body talk. Continuing to exist in a bigger body and in a world that likes to blame and shame, I made the choice to fight back against that narrative and start to heal. I wanted to feel worthy of this body and the beautiful life I live.

Through my healing journey I learned that my experiences were real and my feelings were valid. I learned reconnecting with my body was not scary. Holding space for my own healing has grounded me in my ability to have courage against my triggers and pack my tool box full.

I specialize in self advocacy, boundary setting & values based work with a foundation in empathy & recognition. I utilize elements of healing & trauma practices throughout all of my work with clients. I’ve been coaching within the personal growth world for 14 years. I really starting to hone in on trauma informed and counselling techniques for the last 5 years in my social work practice, meeting and working with Lauren as a mentor through her 1:1 coaching over the last year.
